The Standards are a shared vision for what all students deserve to learn in CS. They describe what students should know and be able to do, but they do not prescribe a specific curriculum, tool, lesson sequence, or assessment.
There is no AI without CS . AI makes foundational CS more important because students need to understand the algorithms, data, systems, programming practices, human decisions, and social impacts behind the tools shaping their lives. AI content is infused throughout the updated Standards.
The revision balances continuity and change. It preserves a coherent PK–12 CS foundation while updating it for a world where AI, data, cybersecurity, human-centered design, and sociotechnical impacts are much more visible.
These standards were built for and by the CS education community. Hundreds of teachers, researchers, state leaders, curriculum providers, advisors, and reviewers shaped the work across the three-year revision process.
The standards are grounded in research and informed by practice. The standards are the product of both research evidence and professional judgment from the CS education community. Research helped identify what is essential for all students, how students learn CS, how the field is changing, and which new priorities need to be elevated. Teacher and practitioner expertise helped translate that research into standards that are usable in real classrooms.
Equity is a key value that shaped the process, content, examples, implementation flexibility, and attention to student identity, access, participation, and experience throughout the revision process (we here in the Bay Area proudly incorporate equity in our daily educational practices).
Computing is sociotechnical . Students need to learn how computing systems work and how human choices shape their design, use, risks, benefits, and impacts. These ideas come to life in the standards through Ethics and Social Responsibility practices, Human-Centered Design practices, and content related to history, careers, emerging technologies, and AI.
Dispositions matter because CS learning is more than content acquisition. The dispositions embedded in the standards help name the habits of mind students need for meaningful CS learning: creativity, sense of belonging, critical thinking, persistence, reflectiveness, resourcefulness, and curiosity.
The standards are designed for flexible implementation (with teacher supports). The standards should feel ambitious but usable. They were designed with the idea that there is no one-size-fits-all approach and that implementation may look different across contexts.
Implementation is the next phase of the work . The launch of the standards is a key milestone, but just marks the beginning of a larger effort to bring them to life in classrooms.
